The number of cars on Dutch roads rose sharply last year. More than 180,000 passenger cars were added, so there are now 9.4 million passenger cars driving around in the Netherlands.

A spokesperson for the trade organization BOVAG confirmed this after reporting from the AD . 370,000 new cars were sold last year, a lot more than the year before. This is mainly due to a catch-up of postponed deliveries in 2022 due to Corona and shortages of computer chips. Many cars were sold, especially in the first months of 2023.

In addition, 254,000 cars were imported, 280,000 cars were exported, and 164,000 passenger cars were scrapped. Bottom line: 180,000 cars have been added in 2023. In previous years, around 100,000 cars were added per year.

Many cars were sold throughout Europe last year. In the first nine months of 2023, almost 17 percent more new cars were registered than in the same period a year earlier. Despite the growth, the European car market has not yet returned to pre-corona levels.
