The insured damage as a result of the recent earthquake in Japan could amount to the equivalent of 5.85 billion euros. This is estimated by Karen Clark & Co (KCC), an agency that specializes in figures and estimates surrounding these types of disasters.
According to the company, damage to homes accounts for more than two-thirds of the total. Many buildings with other functions, such as factories and shopping centers, have been constructed to be more earthquake-resistant in the affected cities. These buildings often have a steel construction, which makes them less likely to collapse.
Monday’s earthquake had a magnitude of 7.6 and was followed by numerous aftershocks. In several cities on the west coast, many houses collapsed or were destroyed by fire. The full extent of the destruction has not yet been determined.
According to the latest reports, the death toll is approaching a hundred. There are also many missing and injured people. The work of the thousands of rescuers is complicated by aftershocks, landslides and damaged roads. They have not yet managed to reach hundreds of people in the worst-hit province of Ishikawa.
