Meta to use your chats with its AI to give you targeted ads

Meta said on Wednesday it will show ads and other content to users based on interactions with its AI-powered digital assistant and other artificial intelligence products, removing the need to use microphones to target ads, Instagram head Adam Mosseri said on his Instagram account.

“I swear, we do not listen to your microphone,” Mosseri said.

Meta announced the change on Wednesday and said it will use interactions with its generative AI to tailor ads and content to users.

The company’s digital assistant is available within Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and Messenger, and Meta said its AI also powers a standalone app and a website.

Meta did not say whether it will offer users an opt-out from this ad targeting based on AI interactions.
