Griekspoor reaches last sixteen in Shanghai with a great victory, now meets Zverev

Tallon Griekspoor has smoothly advanced to the round of 16 at the ATP tournament in Shanghai, defeating Australia’s Jordan Thompson (ranked 28th) in straight sets: 6-3, 6-2.

In the next round, the 28-year-old Dutchman faces a tougher opponent: Germany’s Alexander Zverev, currently ranked third in the world. Griekspoor and Zverev have met four times before, with Griekspoor winning just once — during last year’s ABN Amro tournament in Rotterdam.

Griekspoor (ATP-40) had a challenging match in the first round against Facundo Díaz (ATP-57) on Thursday. He eventually pulled through in three sets to move on to the second round, where things went much smoother against Thompson. In just over an hour, he comfortably dispatched the Australian.

Tough Match Ahead Against Zverev

In the match against Thompson, the first set was evenly contested up to 3-3. However, Griekspoor capitalized on his first break point to take a 4-3 lead and then closed out the set comfortably on his serve.

The second set saw Thompson struggle significantly. While he managed to hold his first service game, he lost both his second and third service games. Griekspoor maintained his momentum and clinched the match with a love game to secure his spot in the round of 16.
