Red Bull and Verstappen will definitely drive with Ford engines from 2026

After persistent rumors, Ford officially announced it today: they will return as an engine supplier to Formula 1 as of 2026. The American car giant did this just before the presentation of Red Bull in New York. Max Verstappen’s team will be the manufacturer’s main partner. AlphaTauri will also use the Ford engines.

“This is an exciting new chapter in Ford’s motorsport story,” said CEO Bill Ford. “That story started when my great-grandfather won a race. That helped start our business.”

New engine regulations will be in force in Formula 1 from 2026. Work is already underway on the new engine in the Red Bull Powertrains factory, which was set up by Red Bull itself. In exchange for the brand name on the Red Bull, Ford will invest money in this factory and provide technical support.

“It is fantastic to welcome Ford back to Formula 1 through this partnership,” said Red Bull team principal Christian Horner. “Being able to benefit from the experience of a carmaker like Ford as an independent engine manufacturer puts us in a good position compared to the competition.”

“Ford has a rich motorsport history. From Jim Clark to Ayrton Senna and Michael Schumacher, the names speak for themselves. To open the next chapter of that dynasty as Red Bull Ford is extremely exciting for us at Red Bull Powertrains. The 2026 season is Although still some time away, for us work is already starting on the way to a new future and a continuous evolution of Red Bull Racing.”

Ford very successful as an engine builder in Formula 1
Ford is third on the list of engine manufacturers with the most wins. From the late 1960s to the early 1980s, the Americans were victorious with the DFV-V8 built by the English Cosworth. Since 2004, the brand is no longer active in the royal class.

“It is great news for the sport that Ford is returning in 2026,” said Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali. “Ford is a great addition to the wonderful automakers we already have.” FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem is also happy with Ford’s return. “There are few brands with such a great history in motorsport.”

Red Bull presented the new car for 2023 on Friday afternoon. It will be in action for the first time on February 23 during the test days in Bahrain. A week later, the first Grand Prix of the season is also in Bahrain.
