Puerto Rican boxer Paul Bamba dies aged 35

Paul Bamba, the Puerto Rican boxer who captured the WBA Gold Cruiserweight title, has died at the age of 35, his manager Ne-Yo announced.

Bamba achieved a career milestone on December 21 by defeating Mexican fighter Rogelio Medina to claim the championship. The news of his passing was shared in a joint statement issued by singer Ne-Yo, who signed Bamba to his management company in November, alongside the boxer’s family.

“It is with profound sorrow that we announce the passing of beloved son, brother, friend, and boxing champion Paul Bamba, whose light and love touched countless lives,” the statement read.

Describing Bamba, the statement continued, “He was a fierce yet confident competitor with an unrelenting ambition to achieve greatness. But more than anything, he was a tremendous individual who inspired many with his exceptional drive and determination. We are heartbroken by his passing and kindly ask for privacy and understanding during this difficult time as we collectively navigate our grief.”

A Champion in and Out of the Ring

Bamba’s 2024 season was marked by dominance, with the fighter winning all 14 of his matches by knockout. His triumphant victory over Medina in New Jersey capped off an impressive year and cemented his status as one of boxing’s top athletes.

In a reflective Instagram post following his championship win, Bamba expressed gratitude and determination. “This year I set out with a goal. I did just that. It wasn’t easy; there were many obstacles that I adapted to overcome, and I kept on the path we set regardless of extenuating circumstances,” he wrote.

He encouraged his followers to pursue their dreams, adding, “If you’ve got what some might call an outlandish goal, go chase it. Anyone who thinks that isn’t as brave as you—prove them wrong.”

A Legacy of Power

Over the course of his career, Paul Bamba recorded 19 wins in 22 bouts, with 18 of those victories coming by knockout. His skill, power, and determination made him a formidable presence in the boxing world.

Among those paying tribute was fellow boxer Jake Paul, whom Bamba had publicly called out for a potential match. Paul posted on X (formerly Twitter): “RIP Paul Bamba.”

Bamba’s untimely death leaves the boxing community mourning the loss of a rising champion whose legacy will continue to inspire.
