Teun Koopmeiners is one of the most expensive Dutch footballers of all time after his transfer to Juventus for around 52 million euros. Only three Dutchmen were paid more.
Koopmeiners completed his long-awaited transfer to Juventus on Wednesday evening, after a transfer soap opera that lasted for weeks. He was determined to make the move and refused to train with Atalanta, while the Italian club did not want to let the Dutchman go.
Ultimately, Atalanta did agree to a transfer for a fixed transfer fee of around 51.3 million euros. That amount could increase to around 60.7 million euros due to bonuses. Regardless of whether the bonuses are paid out, Koopmeiners will end up in fifth place of the most expensive Dutch footballers of all time.
Frenkie de Jong leads the rankings. He left Ajax for FC Barcelona in the summer of 2019 for around 86 million euros and is the most expensive Dutch footballer ever. That same summer, Ajax sold Matthijs de Ligt to Juventus for around 85.5 million euros, putting the centre-back in second place
Third place is taken by Virgil van Dijk, who moved from Southampton to Liverpool in the summer of 2018 for around 84.65 million euros. De Ligt is also in fourth place with his transfer from Juventus to Bayern Munich in 2022 (67 million euros).
Koopmeiners’ multi-million transfer is the most expensive transfer involving a Dutchman this summer. Earlier, De Ligt went to Manchester United for 45 million euros, who also signed Joshua Zirkzee for a hefty sum. Zirkzee came over from Bologna for 40 million euros.
