Marko announces Red Bull candidates for new race

Formula 1 is actively considering introducing a special sprint race for young drivers. Despite the fact that it has not yet been officially announced, Helmut Marko is already making an advance by revealing who is eligible on behalf of Red Bull.

After the last Grand Prix in Abu Dhabi, Formula 1 wants to organize a special sprint race for young drivers. Even though the plan is not yet official, Helmut Marko is a fan. The Austrian can also immediately reveal who will participate on behalf of Red Bull and RB.

“The GP performances of Oliver Bearman and especially Franco Colapinto have shown that the young people are ready for promotion,” said Marko in his column at Speed week. “The old philosophy of some team bosses that you can only promote drivers with three or four years of experience to a top team is outdated. Mercedes has now proven this with the decision (around Kimi Antonelli ed.), just like Red Bull Racing in the past has done several times.”

“So you can rely on the youth. It’s a bit of a risk, but it’s manageable and worth it. You have to give the boys the chance to prove themselves in the GP car after they climb the youth ladder. This is OK in principle, but unfortunately far too expensive. It starts in the karts and extends to all classes. The FIA should start there and see how they can get costs under control,” said the 81-year-old Austrian.

According to Marko, there is still plenty of talent in the current Red Bull pool, of which two men can already prepare for an F1 ‘debut’ when the FIA officially gives the green light for the rookie race: “We have other strong juniors in the youth program, such as Ayumu Iwasa and Isack Hadjar. We will use them in the rookie sprint, which will be held on the junior test day after the season finale in Abu Dhabi.”
