Former professional footballer Eljero Elia was involved in a multi-car crash on the A4 motorway near Leiden on Saturday evening when his Lamborghini Urus collided with three other vehicles, he said.
The Lamborghini Urus, worth over €300,000, was carrying Elia, his wife and two friends, Elia said.
“We had just come out of a speed check, so I accelerated again. I didn’t see the traffic in front of me stop; they didn’t have their hazard lights on. Before you know it, you’re right on top of them,” Elia said Sunday morning.
All vehicles involved were severely damaged, with one car even losing a wheel, Elia said.
Elia, who played for Feyenoord and ADO Den Haag and earned 30 caps for the Netherlands, said he has a bruised hand and pain in his ribs and neck.
“Saturday evening I was full of adrenaline, but only now do I realize how fast it all happened,” Elia said. “I’m aware it could have been worse. Fortunately, everyone came out okay.”
