FIFA penalizes El Salvador for racist speech at duel with Suriname

FIFA has fined El Salvador and ordered reduced attendance for the next home match after fans directed racist abuse during Suriname’s 2-1 win at Cuscatlán Stadium in San Salvador earlier this month.

The fine money will be invested in a previously approved anti-discrimination plan, Fesfut said. In addition, fewer supporters will be welcome at the next home match of the Salvadoran national team.

Incident and reactions

Suriname said after the game that players were being targeted by fans with racist talking points and gestures. National coach Stanley Menzo raised the issue at his post-match press conference, asking, “Why are your fans yelling ‘black’ at my players?”

Captain Shaquille Pinas also said things like “black” and “monkey” had been shouted.

The Salvadoran federation said it “resolutely rejects any expression of racism or discrimination.” Moreover, Fesfut is committed “to living Salvadoran soccer in an atmosphere of respect, equality and unity.”
