Trump writes on Truth Social that intelligence shows it was a vessel that was smuggling drugs. Those on board were said to be affiliated with a known drug network and sailing through a notorious smuggling route.
The attack took place in international waters, Trump writes. Six men were killed. There were no injuries on the American side. The president also posted images of the attack with the message.
This is not the first time the Americans have attacked a boat off the coast of Venezuela. It has happened four times before in the past month and a half. In total, more than 20 people were killed in those attacks.
According to Trump, Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro has ties to drug gangs. Maduro denies that.
Experts argue that Trump’s attacks on boats in international waters may be illegal and have little effect in the fight against drug smuggling.
