Never before has the Secret Service uncovered such a large operation, reports The New York Times. The network could be used to take down mobile networks and for espionage. As far as is known, that has not happened.
The network was discovered in the run-up to the annual United Nations General Assembly. For that, more than 100 world leaders are gathering in New York this week. The Secret Service is investigating the suspicion that the SIM cards and servers were to cause disruption during that meeting.
Little else is known about the operation, except that the network was found and defused last month. Initial analysis of data found on the sim cards indicates that at least one country is involved in the network. Links were also discovered with criminals known to U.S. authorities.
