Russian President Vladimir Putin formally apologized to Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev on Saturday for what he referred to as a “tragic incident” involving the crash of an Azerbaijan Airlines plane in Russian airspace. The apology, issued via a Kremlin statement, marked the first official acknowledgment by Russia of involvement in the disaster. However, Putin stopped short of accepting full responsibility for the crash.
The Azerbaijan Airlines plane went down on Wednesday while en route to Grozny, the capital of Chechnya. Wreckage from the aircraft was discovered near Aktau, a city in southwestern Kazakhstan. The crash claimed the lives of at least 38 people, while 29 passengers survived.
Investigation Underway
The cause of the crash remains under investigation. Initially, Russian authorities attributed the incident to adverse weather conditions, citing heavy fog and a bird strike to the engine. However, later findings revealed that the plane had been hit by gunfire.
According to the Kremlin, the aircraft was rerouted after Grozny came under attack by Ukrainian drones on Wednesday. Russian air defenses reportedly intercepted the drones, though the Kremlin has not clarified how these actions may have affected the plane.
U.S. and Ukrainian Responses
The United States has suggested that Russian anti-aircraft fire might have been responsible for the crash. “Preliminary indications suggest that the plane could have been downed by Russian anti-aircraft defenses,” a U.S. government spokesperson stated on Friday.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky also addressed the incident, offering condolences to President Aliyev and calling for an independent investigation. Writing on the platform X, formerly known as Twitter, Zelensky urged Russia to provide a “clear explanation” and cease spreading “misinformation” about the crash.
Ongoing Developments
As the investigation continues, international scrutiny grows regarding the incident. Both Azerbaijan and Ukraine have expressed their insistence on transparency and accountability, while Moscow has yet to provide further details about the events leading up to the tragedy.
The crash, which has raised concerns over air safety in a conflict-ridden region, underscores the broader risks associated with the ongoing tensions between Russia and Ukraine. Further developments are expected as investigators work to piece together the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
