Munich Airport postponed the planned restart of flight operations on Saturday, Oct. 4, after new drone sightings, the airport said on its website.
The airport had announced on Friday it would restart air traffic at 5 a.m. Saturday, but “due to drone sightings, the start of flight operations on Oct. 4 has been postponed,” the website reads. The airport later said that starting at 7 a.m., traffic will resume “incrementally.”
Three flights to Amsterdam scheduled Saturday morning were canceled.
The airport has been plagued by drones several times in recent days. Thursday night dozens of flights were diverted, and Friday night the scenario repeated itself.
A total of at least three thousand passengers have already been affected by canceled flights. They were offered camp beds, blankets, drinks and snacks at the airport.
Drones have been spotted in several places in Europe in recent weeks. Earlier, Copenhagen airport in Denmark was shut down due to spotted drones.
The European Commission accused Russia of being behind the drones. Russian President Vladimir Putin laughed that suggestion away.
On Friday, drones were also spotted over a military base in Belgium, on the border with Germany. Belgian Defense Minister Theo Francken said that “it could be” that Russia is behind the drones, but that this remains to be investigated.
