On Saturday, “drones were spotted above crucial parts of our army brigade headquarters,” Francken stated on X. “This was not the work of amateurs, but of skilled drone pilots.” He informed VRT NWS that there were four or five drones involved at that time.
The Marche-en-Famenne military base (MEF), the largest army base in Wallonia, is regarded by Francken as the “most important land force barracks” in Belgium. “It houses critical infrastructure,” the minister told Het Laatste Nieuws.
An hour and a half after his post on X, another message appeared. “Last night, multiple drones were again spotted above MEF.” Both incidents are under investigation by the police and the military intelligence service ADIV, the minister reported. He provided little information regarding the type of drones, their numbers, or those responsible.
Earlier this month, around fifteen drones were observed over another Belgian base, Elsenborn, which is located near Germany and not far from the Netherlands.
Recently, an increasing number of European countries have reported sightings of drones. In Germany, Denmark, and Norway, air traffic has been temporarily disrupted due to drone activity.
