Investigations into mass grave sites in Syria have uncovered widespread evidence of atrocities carried out under President Bashar al-Assad’s regime. According to international prosecutor Stephen Rapp, the findings expose a “machinery of death” comparable to Nazi-era crimes, with over 100,000 people believed to have been tortured and executed since 2013.
Eyewitness accounts, satellite imagery, and reports from human rights organizations indicate that these killings were systematically organized, involving secret police, prison guards, and gravediggers. Many victims were reportedly subjected to brutal treatment before their deaths, with families left unaware of their fate.
The International Commission on Missing Persons has documented numerous cases, suggesting that many more undiscovered graves exist across Syria. Efforts are underway to preserve evidence for future prosecutions, though justice for these crimes remains elusive.
