The water level of the Rio Negro, one of the main tributaries of the Amazon River, has fallen to its lowest level since measurements began in 1902, Brazil’s geological government agency reported.
The Amazon River in South America is the longest river in the world and the river with by far the most water. The river is fed by various tributaries. Of these, the Rio Negro is the largest.
From the Brazilian city of Manaus, which is located on the Rio Negro, come images of a dried-up harbor. The river now has a depth of 12.66 meters. The average depth of the river is 20 to 30 meters.
Rare phenomenon
Other tributaries, such as the Solimoes, are also experiencing record lows and water levels have dropped to extreme lows. The low water level is due to severe drought in the country and forest fires in the Amazon. At least 59 percent of Brazilians are affected by the drought.
In the tropical rainforest, drought is by definition a rare phenomenon . But the magnitude of the drought in Brazil in recent years is unprecedented and long-lasting. The Amazon is also very important for global biodiversity. Ecological damage can occur among fish species and other underwater life if the drought continues.
Experts point to climate change, which causes dry seasons. For people living in the Amazon, the drought can have serious consequences. Residents depend on the rivers for food, water and transport.
