Lebanon postpones start of school year until November 4 due to Israeli attacks

Lebanon is postponing the start of the new school year due to Israeli attacks on the country. Education Minister Abbas Halabi has announced that the country’s more than one million students will not be allowed to return to school until November 4.

The number of Israeli army attacks on Lebanon has increased significantly in recent weeks. According to the Lebanese authorities, 23 people were killed and 93 wounded on Saturday.

Heavy airstrikes were carried out on the south of the Lebanese capital Beirut during the night from Saturday to Sunday. State news agency NNA spoke of “the most violent night since the beginning of the aggression”. According to Lebanese media, Beirut was attacked again during the day.

More than 1.2 million people in Lebanon have fled to neighbouring Syria, among other places. Many people have been displaced, especially recently.

Israel and Hezbollah have been attacking each other regularly for a year. The Lebanese movement says it is doing so in support of Hamas in the Gaza Strip. Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati has called for Israel to agree to a ceasefire.
