Journalists leave Pentagon in protest of new press policy

Journalists left the Pentagon on Wednesday after at least 30 newsrooms refused to sign a new press policy that had to be signed by Tuesday to keep accreditation and workspace.

At least 30 newsrooms, including The New York Times, The Washington Post, Fox News and The Associated Press, refused to sign. Newsrooms said the rules jeopardize press freedom.

The journalists turned in their press passes Wednesday and left the building together.

The Pentagon Press Association, which represents reporters at the ministry, called it “a dark day for press freedom that raises concerns about a declining American commitment to transparency in governance, public accountability within the Pentagon and freedom of speech.”
