The fate of the 64-year-old Nasrallah was unclear for a long time. Shortly after the attack on a densely populated neighborhood in southern Beirut, sources told Reuters and AFP that the Hezbollah leader was unharmed. A few hours later, it was reported that there was no more contact with Nasrallah.
Nasrallah led Hezbollah for more than 32 years. According to the Israeli army, the Hezbollah leader was hiding in a bunker under the apartment building that was hit on Friday. Hezbollah has not yet said anything about Nasrallah.
According to Israel, the attack was carried out while Hezbollah’s top brass were at their headquarters, where the militant group’s leaders were coordinating terrorist activities against Israel, the military said.
Israel holds Nasrallah responsible for the deaths of “countless” Israeli civilians and soldiers. According to Israel, the Hezbollah leader is also responsible for “thousands of terrorist attacks”, both in Israel and abroad. Israel also accuses Nasrallah of dragging Lebanon and the region into a spiral of violence.
Israel also reports that Ali Karchi was killed on Friday evening. He is believed to have been the head of Hezbollah’s southern forces.
Israel is now carrying out daily bombardments of Hezbollah targets in Lebanon. A ground offensive also appears to be in preparation .
