Growing Threats in Gaza: Infant Succumbs to Cold Amid Harsh Winter Conditions

Concerns over worsening winter conditions in Gaza are mounting as multiple children have died in recent days due to extreme cold in makeshift tent camps. The latest victim is Sila, a three-week-old infant, whose death underscores the dire humanitarian crisis in the region.

Infant Dies from Exposure

According to Munir Al Bursh, director of Gaza’s health ministry, Sila “froze to death from the extreme cold.” In a video shared on X, he held the child’s lifeless body as he detailed the tragedy, a story later verified by Associated Press (AP) journalists.

The infant’s father, Mahmoud Al Faseeh, had been sheltering with her in a tent outside Khan Younis. Despite wrapping her in a blanket, the cold ground and nighttime temperatures proved fatal.

“It’s unbearable for us adults, let alone for a baby,” Al Faseeh told AP. “Sila woke up crying three times during the night. By morning, she was unresponsive—her body frozen.”

Efforts to revive Sila at a nearby field hospital were unsuccessful. Images shared by local media showed the baby’s lifeless form, with her skin pale and blotchy, and her lips tinged purple from the cold.

UNICEF Warns of Rising Risks for Gaza’s Children

Local doctors report that Sila is the third child to die from exposure in the past week. UNICEF has repeatedly raised alarms about the worsening conditions in Gaza’s overcrowded refugee camps.

“Children in Gaza are cold, sick, and traumatized,” said Rosalia Bollen of UNICEF. “Hunger, malnutrition, and poor living conditions are putting their lives in grave danger.”

The humanitarian crisis is compounded by severe shortages of food and basic necessities. Bollen noted that more than 96 percent of women and children in Gaza are unable to meet their basic needs. “Most families are surviving on rationed supplies such as flour, lentils, and canned food—a diet that is slowly deteriorating their health.”

Journalists Targeted Amid Continuing Airstrikes

While the humanitarian situation worsens, Israeli airstrikes continue to devastate the region. On Thursday, five journalists were killed when their vehicle was struck near a hospital in central Gaza.

The victims were employees of Al-Quds Al-Youm television station. According to Palestinian media and local reporters, the vehicle was clearly marked as a press van, bearing the word “PRESS.”

The journalists had been en route to cover events at a hospital and the Nuseirat refugee camp. However, the Israeli army stated that the attack targeted “a group of terrorists from the Palestinian Islamic Jihad.”

A Growing Humanitarian Crisis

The tragedies in Gaza highlight the urgent need for international intervention as winter exacerbates already dire living conditions. With children and vulnerable populations facing cold, hunger, and trauma, the crisis calls for immediate global attention and support.
