Gold mine collapses in Venezuela, killing at least fourteen people

At least fourteen people have been killed in a mining accident in Venezuela. Footage from local authorities shows heavy rainfall in the area in a short period of time.

A rescue operation has been launched because people may still be trapped in the gold mine in the city of El Callao. Emergency services will first pump water out of the flooded mine tunnels before the rescue operation can begin.

The city of El Callao has approximately 30,000 residents, almost all of whom make their living from mining. Accidents are common in mines in Venezuela, where unsafe working conditions are common.
