The federal police will be empowered to protect airports, train stations and ministries from drones, among other things. Against this, the police will be allowed to use appropriate technical means if necessary, German media report.
“Drone attacks threaten our security. We will not allow that,” Chancellor Friedrich Merz wrote on X. In recent weeks, unknown drones have been spotted more frequently over important buildings and sites. Munich’s airport came to a standstill for days because of multiple drones.
Countries such as Norway and Denmark have also seen mysterious drones recently. Suspects have not yet been officially identified, although Denmark and Germany are making connections to previous Russian airspace violations.
Many countries are struggling to combat unwanted drones. Downing them can present difficulties. Debris can quickly damage or pose a hazard.
In Germany, tackling drones nationwide is especially difficult. The country is divided into relatively many different police and other security agencies. For example, the Bavarian state government itself recently decided that Bavarian police may shoot down drones.
