Brazil: Ex-leader Bolsonaro appeals 27-year prison sentence

Lawyers for former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro filed an appeal on Monday against his 27-year prison sentence, which was imposed due to his involvement in a failed coup attempt following his defeat in the 2022 election by current President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.

The Supreme Court judges are not bound by any deadline to review the appeal.

In September, a Supreme Court panel, consisting of five judges, voted four to one to convict Bolsonaro on five charges. These charges included participation in an armed criminal organization, attempting to violently overthrow democracy, and orchestrating a coup.

The conspiracy reportedly included plans to assassinate Lula, his vice president Geraldo Alckmin, and Alexandre de Moraes, one of the judges who played a crucial role in determining Bolsonaro’s fate.

Prosecutors indicated that the plot was thwarted primarily due to a lack of military support.

The former president, who served from 2019 to 2023, has been under house arrest since August.

According to Brazilian law, he will not be incarcerated until all legal options have been exhausted.
