Lebanese security officials arrested two relatives of ousted Syrian President Bashar al-Assad at Beirut’s international airport on Friday. The detainees, identified as the wife and daughter of Duraid al-Assad, were reportedly attempting to board a flight to Egypt using forged passports.
Family Ties to Duraid al-Assad and Rifaat al-Assad
The arrested individuals are the family members of Duraid al-Assad, the son of former Syrian Vice President Rifaat al-Assad. Notably, Rifaat al-Assad, who is Bashar al-Assad’s uncle, departed Lebanon the day before the arrests. Despite his controversial background, the 87-year-old was allowed to leave the country using his real passport.
War Crimes Allegations Against Rifaat al-Assad
In March, Swiss authorities charged Rifaat al-Assad with war crimes and crimes against humanity. He is accused of orchestrating widespread murder and torture during his tenure as a military commander in the early 1980s.
One of the most infamous incidents linked to Rifaat al-Assad was the Hama massacre in 1982, when his military unit shelled the city to suppress an uprising, resulting in the deaths of thousands of civilians. The brutality of this operation earned him the nickname “the Butcher of Hama.”
Ongoing Investigations
While Rifaat al-Assad managed to leave Lebanon unimpeded, the arrests of his family members highlight the scrutiny surrounding the Assad family’s activities. The incident raises questions about the use of forged documents and the broader efforts to hold individuals linked to the Assad regime accountable for past crimes.
