At least 12 dead and 17 missing due to typhoon Bualoi in Vietnam

At least 12 people died and 17 were reported missing in Vietnam on Monday after Typhoon Bualoi made landfall, authorities said.

Authorities said the storm has damaged hundreds of homes, flooded nearly 1,400 hectares of farmland and knocked out power in some areas.

Much is still unclear about the exact number of dead, injured and missing, and current numbers could still rise, officials said.

Bualoi brought heavy rainfall across most of Vietnam since Saturday and moved along the coast for hours before making landfall Monday morning, creating waves as high as 8 meters, officials said.

At sea, winds reached 117 kilometers per hour; on land the storm weakened to a maximum of 74 kilometers per hour, officials said.

The Vietnamese government evacuated more than 28,500 people ahead of the storm. Four airports were closed and hundreds of flights were canceled, authorities said.

Earlier the storm struck the Philippines, where local authorities said at least 10 people were killed and about 400,000 residents were evacuated.
