The death toll from the collapse of a bridge linking the northern Brazilian states of Maranhão and Tocantins has climbed to 10, authorities confirmed. The Juscelino Kubitschek de Oliveira Bridge, spanning the Tocantins River, crumbled on December 24, sending several vehicles into the water below.
The Brazilian Navy reported that the body of a woman was recovered six kilometers from the bridge on Friday. Rescue teams are continuing their search for eight individuals who remain missing.
Vehicles Plunge into River
According to police stationed at the Maranhão-Tocantins border, four trucks, two cars, and two motorcycles fell into the river as a section of the 533-meter bridge collapsed. The bridge, built in the 1960s, connects the cities of Estreito and Aguiarnópolis, located approximately 1,300 kilometers north of the capital, Brasília.
Investigation Underway
Authorities have yet to determine the cause of the collapse. The structure’s age and potential maintenance issues are likely to be examined as part of an ongoing investigation.
