Today’s 100th birthday is not the milestone Jimmy Carter was looking forward to. Although no other former US president has ever reached that age, Carter wants to hang on a little longer: he hopes to be able to cast his vote for fellow party member Kamala Harris in his important swing state of Georgia.
Carter was born a century ago in the small town of Plains, New York, where he still lives today. Although he now receives palliative care, his family says he still follows current events with interest.
“Especially in the last few months, he’s been very interested in world news, in politics,” grandson Jason recently said of his pawpaw . “When we asked him if he was looking forward to his 100th birthday, he said he was mostly looking forward to voting for Kamala Harris.”
