The Netherlands is getting a little smaller: one hectare sold to Belgium

The pasture, which belongs to the Stramprooierbroek nature reserve, is now definitively in Belgian hands. Until the Belgian war of independence in 1830, the piece of land belonged to the Netherlands. Nine years later, the pasture was awarded to Belgium, but on paper that was not yet the case.

Nothing was done with the area the size of a football field, a spokesperson for the municipality of Weert tells 1Limburg . For now, this is the only piece of land that is being transferred to our southern neighbors. The area is also said to contain paths and roads from Stramproy, but it is not known what will happen to them.

Belgium will consider what it wants to do with the pasture. According to VRT News, the piece of land will be in the hands of the Belgian nature organisation Het Limburgs Landschap. The field is adjacent to an area that is grazed and is possibly important for water management.

Belgium and the Netherlands have been negotiating about the hectare for three years.
