Sudan’s paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have announced that they have taken control of the army’s headquarters in el-Fasher, the last major city in the Darfur region that was not previously under their control.
In a statement, the RSF asserted that they had “extended control over the city of el-Fasher from the grip of mercenaries and militias,” referring to the Sudanese army.
A video shared on social media by the RSF on Sunday depicted army vehicles retreating from the headquarters, with RSF soldiers celebrating in front of a sign labeled “Sixth Division Infantry.”
If verified, the RSF’s claim would mark a significant advancement in Sudan’s ongoing two-year conflict. The war erupted in Sudan in 2023 when the Sudanese army and the RSF, previously allies, turned against one another.
