Traffic Jams Intensifies on Dutch Roads in 2024, More Delays Expected in 2025

The severity of traffic jams on Dutch roads surged by 8% in 2024 compared to the previous year, according to an analysis by the ANWB using traffic data from TomTom. Population growth and an increase in the number of vehicles are cited as the primary drivers behind the rising congestion, with further delays anticipated in 2025 due to extensive roadworks.

Traffic Patterns and Regional Trends

While the first half of 2024 experienced relatively quieter roads, traffic congestion intensified during the summer and autumn months. The ANWB observed a notable 18% increase in daytime traffic jams compared to 2023, with midweek days showing the sharpest spikes. Traffic jams on Wednesdays rose by 40%, and Thursdays saw a 25% increase.

Weekend traffic delays also grew significantly, primarily due to roadworks, with a 45% increase in congestion during these periods. Morning and evening rush hours experienced a more modest rise, with traffic jams increasing by 6%.

Regionally, traffic congestion expanded across almost all provinces, with South Holland recording a 3% rise in traffic jam intensity. In contrast, North Brabant was a rare exception, reporting a 3% decline. Northern provinces experienced less significant changes overall.

Top Traffic Bottlenecks in 2024

Certain roadways emerged as key trouble spots, with the A27 between Lexmond and Werkendam once again ranking as the most congested route in the ANWB’s “traffic jam top 10.” Other heavily affected areas include:

  1. A27 (Lexmond to Werkendam) – Retained its top position.
  2. A4 (The Hague-South to Ketheltunnel) – Ranked second.
  3. A2 (Empel interchange to Kerkdriel) – Third place.
  4. A58 (Tilburg-Reeshof to Bavel) – Newly added to the list, ranked fourth.
  5. A20 (Capelle aan den IJssel to Terbregseplein interchange) – Entered the list at tenth place.

Roadworks and Projections for 2025

The congestion issue is set to persist into 2025, with Rijkswaterstaat planning extensive roadworks that will likely exacerbate delays. Key projects include:

  • A12 (Arnhem to The Hague) – Road closures between Veenendaal and the Lunetten interchange.
  • N33 (Veendam to Assen) – Significant disruptions expected.
  • A10 (Amsterdam ring road) – Partial closures in various sections.

With construction activities slated to temporarily close roads for days at a time, further increases in traffic congestion appear unavoidable.

Conclusion

As traffic jams continue to escalate, addressing the challenges of growing populations and increasing vehicle numbers remains a critical priority for policymakers. In the meantime, drivers can expect extended delays, particularly in regions undergoing significant infrastructure upgrades.
