On Saturday, dense fog once again caused significant disruptions at Schiphol Airport, leading to the cancellation of dozens of flights. Eindhoven Airport also faced operational challenges, postponing flights until later in the day due to poor visibility.
A spokesperson for Schiphol informed news agency ANP that approximately 40 flights—both arrivals and departures—were cancelled out of a total of around 1,200 scheduled flights. Similar disruptions were reported on Friday when heavy fog affected several Dutch airports. However, Rotterdam The Hague Airport stated that no flights would be cancelled on Saturday despite the adverse weather conditions.
Navigation Systems Impacted by Fog
The dense fog has also hampered the functionality of radio navigation systems, according to a spokesperson from Eindhoven Airport. These systems are crucial for precision approaches during landings, which require sufficient runway visibility—conditions that the current fog fails to provide.
Weather Outlook
According to meteorological service Weerplaza, the fog is expected to dissipate later in the day, although cloudy skies will persist over much of the Netherlands. The southern and southeastern regions may experience some clearing, with the possibility of limited sunshine.
Previous Disruptions
The weekend’s challenges follow similar disruptions on Friday, when Schiphol Airport cancelled nearly 60 flights due to heavy fog. Eindhoven Airport and Rotterdam The Hague Airport also experienced cancellations and delays during the same period.
These weather-related disruptions underscore the challenges posed by dense fog for aviation operations across the Netherlands.
