In Apeldoorn and surrounding areas, there’s been a mad rush for bottled water. Social media is flooded with images of people filling up their shopping carts and cars with bottles, and shelves in local supermarkets are already looking bare.
This frenzy started after drinking water company Vitens issued a warning that the local tap water has been contaminated with E.coli, a harmful fecal bacteria. Residents have been advised to boil their tap water for at least three minutes before using it for anything like cooking, making drinks, or brushing their teeth. However, it’s still safe to use tap water for hand washing and showering.
The boiling advisory affects not just Apeldoorn but also nearby areas like Beekbergen, Klarenbeek, Loenen, and Ugchelen. The contamination was discovered at a Vitens facility on Amersfoortseweg in Apeldoorn, and the warning is expected to remain in place until at least October 14.
