The dog bit its owners on the night of Friday to Saturday at the Shetland in Zoetermeer. “Unfortunately, we had to shoot the animal in the garden,” police reported on X.
The owners were taken to hospital with their injuries.
A police spokesman told news agency ANP that the dog had possibly broken loose. There were two other dogs in the home.
In serious biting incidents, a municipality may decide to impose measures on the owners, such as a muzzle. In extreme cases, a decision may be made to put a dog down.
Because the bite incident in Zoetermeer involved acute danger, officers decided to shoot the animal.
