No indications of ‘residual threat’ from the Netherlands against Wilders

Three men were arrested in Belgium on Thursday on suspicion of preparing a terrorist assassination, and Geert Wilders said a day later on X that the Netherlands’ National Coordinator for Counterterrorism and Security (NCTV) had confirmed he was one of the targets.

The Belgian prosecutor’s office declined to comment. Wilders, leader of the Party for Freedom (PVV), said he would suspend campaign activities.

The NCTV said there was no “residual threat” against Wilders, a statement Wilders repeated. The Public Prosecution Service, through a spokesman, said no investigation is underway in the Netherlands corresponding to the suspicions in Belgium.

Dutch police told De Telegraaf there are no indications of additional threat directed at Wilders.

Wilders has been protected “in the strictest possible way” for 21 years because of threats, officials have said.

On Sunday night Wilders was absent from the RTL election debate in Amsterdam. The broadcaster offered moving the debate to a secure environment or participation via video link, but Wilders did not respond.
