Travelers typically unlock an OV-bike by holding their OV-chipkaart against the lock. However, this lock is currently malfunctioning. It remains possible to return OV-bikes. The NS is still investigating the cause of the issue and cannot provide a timeline for when it will be resolved.
According to an NS spokesperson, the inclement weather is a silver lining: “It’s currently bad weather for cycling, so hopefully not too many people are looking to rent a bike.”
At the end of September, there was also a disruption in renting OV-bikes that lasted approximately three hours. During that incident, it was still possible to return and lock bikes.
Across the country, there are more than twenty thousand OV-bikes available for rent, with plans to expand this number. By the end of this year, the total is expected to reach 25,000.
