ALBERGEN – The first people arrived Monday afternoon at the former hotel in Albergen (Overijssel), which has been put into use as an asylum seekers’ center, an ANP photographer saw on site. According to the photographer, it was a taxi bus full of people.
A section of the residents of Albergen resisted the arrival of the new centre. Violence was also used. For example, the building was shot at with an air rifle. Someone also set fire to the site. The judge convicted a 49-year-old man from Albergen for threatening the mayor of the municipality of Tubbergen, which includes Albergen.
The opening of the asylum seekers’ centre was supposed to be earlier, but had to be postponed because the building was not yet fire-safe. There is room for 150 people.
