A Dutch soldier has been killed during a military exercise in Germany. According to the Ministry of Defence, it appears to have been an accident. The incident occurred last night near the Munster Süd training area in the state of Lower Saxony, between Hamburg and Hannover.
The victim is a 28-year-old corporal first class in the Army. The Ministry of Defence says it is shocked and offers its condolences to the bereaved. The exercise was scheduled to end today. Due to the death, it ended yesterday.
The Royal Netherlands Marechaussee is investigating the circumstances and is being supported by the German police. A total of approximately 550 military personnel participated in the exercise.
Commander of the Armed Forces Eichelsheim responded on social media to the soldier’s death. He said his thoughts and condolences go out to his family, friends, and colleagues. “I wish them much strength in coping with this great loss.”
