Drone over Schiphol definitively ruled out, suspected balloon not found

On Sunday a State Police spokesman said a special team reviewing radar images found no drone over Schiphol and that initial radio communications suggested a small balloon.

“A special team focused on detecting drones has reviewed all the radar images and no drone has been detected. We can rule that out,” the spokesman said.

“The initial radio correspondence revealed a small balloon. As a result, we consider it plausible that it was a balloon,” he added.

Pilots initially reported a drone in the sky on Saturday, but the object was never found. In the evening the military police announced it believed the object was a balloon. Units searched in vain for the object.

“The balloon probably burst due to the higher air pressure at higher altitude, making the object untraceable,” the spokesman said.

Earlier this week drones disrupted air traffic at several European airports. In Denmark air traffic was shut down repeatedly. The European Commission said it may hold Russia responsible, but the origin of the drones remains unclear.
