Autumn Weather Causes Over 800 Kilometers of Traffic Jams on First Day After Holiday

Mondays are typically not the busiest day of the week in terms of traffic congestion. On average, there are about 575 kilometers of traffic jams during this time of year.

This Monday, however, is experiencing heavier traffic. Around 8:00 AM, there was just over 800 kilometers of congestion reported. “All the vacations are over,” the spokesperson explained. “Additionally, the autumn-like weather contributes to longer traffic jams.”

Rain is falling in several parts of the country on Monday morning. The northern regions are experiencing heavy showers, which may be accompanied by thunderstorms and hail. There are also strong wind gusts along the coast. As a result, a yellow weather warning is in effect until 12:00 PM in Zeeland, South Holland, and North Holland.

While Monday’s traffic is significant, it is still not the busiest morning rush hour of the year. Last year, traffic congestion exceeded 1,000 kilometers. “We are still far from that level,” the spokesperson noted.

Moreover, longer traffic jams are more common at the end of October and in November. The ANWB explains that this is due to a combination of factors. The autumn weather can make driving more challenging and dangerous, prompting motorists to adjust their speed and drive more cautiously.

Additionally, commuters often find themselves driving in the dark due to the end of daylight saving time, which requires extra vigilance. The increased congestion in November can also be attributed to the fact that many people do not take vacation days during that month, leading to higher volumes of commuter traffic.
