Seven people were arrested in riots prior to the FC Twente – Fenerbahçe match last night. Supporters of both clubs clashed in the city centre of Enschede.
At least two people were injured, the police could not yet say how that had happened. According to the regional broadcaster Oost, the Turkish fans broke out of the fan zone after they were provoked by FC Twente supporters.
The two groups came to blows near the Oude Markt and threw patio furniture, bicycles and fireworks. The mobile unit then intervened with dogs and clubs.
Emergency order
To restore calm, the mayor issued an emergency order, initially for part of the city center, later for the entire city. This will remain in effect until 7:00 this morning.
The emergency order allows the police to temporarily take stricter action against rioters. Face-covering clothing is also prohibited.
FC Twente drew its second Europa League match of the season : after the upset at Old Trafford against Manchester United, it also ended 1-1 against Fenerbahçe.
