Flight KL1204, operated by a Boeing 737, experienced a loud noise shortly after departure, prompting the crew to divert to Sandefjord, according to a KLM spokesperson. Upon landing, the aircraft veered off the runway at low speed, coming to rest in a grassy area.
Photos released by Norwegian broadcaster NRK show the plane fully situated on the grass. Local police reported receiving the initial alert at around 7:15 p.m. By 9:00 p.m., all passengers had been safely evacuated. Landings at Sandefjord are currently suspended, according to the airport’s communications manager.
KLM has assured that passengers are being attended to at the site, while the cause of the incident is under investigation.
The aircraft involved has been part of KLM’s fleet since November 2000, making it one of the older planes in the company’s inventory. The average age of KLM’s fleet is just over 12 years.
