The Israeli army said it had launched a “limited and localized” ground operation against Hezbollah in southern Lebanon.
After a massive bombing of Lebanon, Israel launched a ground invasion of its northern neighbor. Troops entered southern Lebanon in an attempt to push Hezbollah beyond the Litani River, 29km from the Israeli border. The announced goal is to facilitate the return of some 60,000 displaced Israelis to their homes in northern Israel.
By killing Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah and several of his commanders over the weekend, Israel has already dealt a major blow to the group. This improved the position of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, even though the majority of Israelis wanted him to withdraw.
