Fire burns a 15th century Lutheran church in northern Germany

A centuries-old Lutheran church burned down in the city of Bremerhaven in northern Germany, reports BILD newspaper, quoted by “Focus”.

“St. Dionysia” was the oldest church in the city. The bell tower was built in the 15th century, and its bells were created in the 13th century. The temple was declared an architectural monument in 1978. In 2002-2003, it was found a hoard of silver coins hidden in 1430.

On Wednesday evening, the roof of the bell tower and the nave caught fire. Firefighters managed to prevent the fire from spreading inside the building, but its upper part was completely burnt. Historically valuable items were taken out of the temple. The cause of the fire is unknown, the police are investigating.
