Germany takes major child abuse platform offline, six arrests

German authorities have shut down a major platform on the dark web dedicated to sharing child abuse material, which had amassed hundreds of thousands of users. In connection with the operation, six suspects have been arrested, according to officials.

Herbert Reul, the Interior Minister of North Rhine-Westphalia, described the case as “dizzyingly large” during an interview with German media, underscoring the severity and scale of the criminal network.

Suspects and Their Backgrounds

The arrested individuals, all German nationals aged between 43 and 69, are suspected not only of managing the platform but also of creating and distributing the abuse images themselves.

Investigation and Raids

The platform has been under investigation since 2020, as reported by local broadcaster WDR. In September, authorities conducted raids across several states, resulting in the seizure of more than 1,500 items, including laptops, mobile phones, DVDs, and thousands of euros in cash.

During the operation, police discovered that one of the suspects possessed 13.5 terabytes of files on his hard drive. According to German police, this is equivalent to approximately 3.4 million photos. The platform’s content consisted entirely of images and videos featuring underage girls, ranging from toddlers to teenagers.

Longevity and Dark Web Access

The child abuse platform, which had been active since 2019, had a notably long lifespan for such illicit sites. The platform was accessible through the dark web, a hidden section of the internet that requires special software to access, providing anonymity for both users and operators.

German authorities continue to investigate the network and its users, demonstrating their commitment to combating child exploitation online.
