Drones spotted over Denmark again, this time at largest air base

Danish media outlets, including TV 2 and BT, report that drones were spotted in several locations across Denmark last night, according to the Ministry of Defense. The specific locations remain unclear. Near Karup, police indicated that one or two drones were involved, and those were not shot down. On Wednesday night, air traffic around Aalborg was disrupted for several hours due to drones flying over the airport, causing a KLM flight to divert to Billund. Earlier, on Monday, the airport in Copenhagen was closed because of drone activity. The identity of those behind the drone incidents is still unknown.

The Danish government has labeled the disruptions as “hybrid attacks,” intended to instill fear. Officials assert that these actions are the work of a “professional party.” When questioned about potential Russian involvement, Danish ministers have been noncommittal, stating there is no evidence linking Russia to the drones. In contrast, the European Commission continues to suggest Russian involvement. The Russian embassy in Denmark has denied any connection to the drones.

Government Response

Denmark has yet to decide whether to convene an emergency meeting of NATO member states under Article 4 of the NATO treaty, which states that allies “shall consult whenever, in the opinion of one of them, the territorial integrity, political independence or security” of a member is threatened. In recent weeks, Poland and Estonia have called for such consultations following drone incursions from Russia and violations of Estonian airspace by Russian fighter jets, respectively.
