A devastating bus accident in Nordland has claimed the lives of three people and left four others critically injured.
The accident occurred at approximately 13:30 on Thursday when a public bus traveling from Narvik skidded off the road and ended up in water in Hadsel. Authorities report that 58 individuals were onboard the bus at the time of the incident.
“We stand in solidarity with those affected by this tragic accident in Hadsel. My thoughts are with all who are impacted. This is a grave situation involving significant loss of life and serious injuries,” said Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre.
He confirmed that Nordland Hospital has activated its emergency protocols and emphasized that further details will be provided as the situation becomes clearer.
“Local police and health services will share updates as soon as they have more information. I want to commend the tireless efforts of police, rescue workers, healthcare professionals, and volunteers who are responding in these incredibly demanding circumstances,” Støre stated.
Eyewitness accounts describe a chaotic and emotional scene at the crash site. A Svolvær resident told VG that his son’s girlfriend was among the passengers on the bus, prompting him to rush to the location as soon as news of the accident broke.
“There were emergency vehicles everywhere, and the atmosphere was filled with panic and confusion. It seemed like the rescue teams were managing the situation, and we saw a helicopter land as we arrived,” he recounted.
He added that his son’s girlfriend suffered minor injuries and was being examined by medical professionals.
“Many people stopped their cars to offer warmth and shelter to passengers. It was heartening to see such compassion during such a difficult moment,” he noted.
Investigations are ongoing as authorities work to determine the cause of the crash and assess its full impact.
