Cross-Border Operation Leads to Arrest of Firearms Trafficker Supplying Contract Killers

Polish authorities, supported by Europol and multiple European countries, apprehended a firearms trafficker supplying weapons to criminal networks across Europe.

A coordinated operation involving law enforcement agencies from Austria, Czechia, Germany, Poland, and Sweden has resulted in the arrest of a suspect involved in large-scale firearms trafficking. The individual was detained in Poland while transporting weapon kits purchased in Austria, marking a significant breakthrough in the fight against illegal arms proliferation in Europe.

Illegal Arsenal Discovered

During the arrest, Polish investigators conducted a thorough search of the suspect’s property and nearby forest areas. They uncovered a vast cache of illegally held firearms, including pistols, rifles, revolvers, and automatic weapons such as Škorpions. The operation also revealed over 80 critical weapon parts and more than 20,000 rounds of ammunition, concealed in barrels buried underground.

Exploiting Legal Loopholes to Supply Criminal Networks

The suspect, a former licensed firearms dealer from Poland, exploited his knowledge of European firearms laws to facilitate his illegal activities. Authorities identified a loophole in Austrian regulations regarding weapon parts kits, which the suspect utilized to acquire firearms components legally before smuggling them into Poland.

Once in Poland, the suspect reassembled the weapons and sold them to criminal networks. Investigators confirmed that he supplied dozens of illegal firearms, including automatic weapons, to organized crime groups in Germany and Poland.

Weapons Linked to Violent Crimes Across Europe

The investigation revealed that weapons sold by the suspect were used in violent crimes, including contract killings by criminal gangs in Sweden. Authorities also traced firearms previously seized in Belgium, Germany, Lithuania, and Sweden back to the suspect, underscoring the extensive reach of his operations.

Europol’s Critical Role in the Investigation

The case originated from intelligence shared by Europol, which flagged an individual purchasing large quantities of weapon kits in Austria. Austrian authorities launched surveillance on the suspect, while a parallel investigation began in Poland.

Europol played a central role in coordinating efforts among the participating countries, facilitating operational meetings, and providing analytical and technical support. Two Europol weapons experts were deployed to Poland to assist in the assessment of the seized firearms.

The swift exchange of information and coordinated action were pivotal in ensuring the suspect’s arrest before the weapons could be moved, used, or destroyed.

Strategic Priorities of Europol

This operation aligns with Europol’s broader objectives of targeting high-value criminals and enhancing cross-border cooperation. Europol prioritizes collaboration among EU Member States, Schengen-associated countries, and other international partners to combat serious organized crime, cybercrime, and terrorism.

By delivering real-time operational support and fostering joint actions, Europol strengthens Europe’s collective security and disrupts criminal enterprises with significant cross-border impact.
