Bacteria causing sepsis in Hong Kong

Twelve monkeys died within 10 days at the Hong Kong Zoo, and tests are now being carried out to determine whether the last animal to die contracted the same bacterial infection that killed the other 11 monkeys.

The monkey has been isolated since October 13, when the first eight deaths were reported, BTV reports.

The autopsy found a large amount of sepsis-causing bacteria that likely came from contaminated soil near the primates’ enclosures, Hong Kong authorities said.

Workers digging near the primate cages are thought to have brought in contaminated soil through their shoes.

The eleven monkeys found dead earlier died of melioidosis, an infectious disease that can be spread through contact with contaminated soil, air or water.
