In El Salvador, at least 12 people were killed on Saturday during a stampede at the Cuscatlán stadium. About 100 people were injured, including children. Two injured people are in a critical condition in hospital.

According to the local newspaper La Prensa Gráfica, fans said that the stadium was already overcrowded even though not everyone was inside yet. The stadium can accommodate more than 53,000 spectators. “People outside pushed in, they fell over us,” said one of those present.

The match between FC Alianza and CD FAS was stopped so that the emergency services could evacuate football fans.

Nine victims died at the scene, according to police. After the stampede, around 100 people were taken to hospitals, some for signs of suffocation. President Nayib Bukele Ortez has said the incident will be investigated and vows that those responsible will be punished.

El Salvador is located in Central America and has over 6 million inhabitants.
